9-man football roundup

September 29, 2017
Pierce County Tribune

With a win last week, the St. John Woodchucks climbed to number two in regional rankings.

However, the North Prairie Cougars were still on top at the time of this writing.

Also at the time of this writing, the North Star Bearcats were third in the region, the Towner-Granville-Upham Titans were fourth, and the Benson County Wildcats were fifth.

- St. John's defense set the tone early in a 38-6 Woodchuck victory last week over the Titans.

After the Titans forced the Woodchucks to punt away their opening drive, the latter would end the Titans ensuing possession with a sack. The Woodchucks then went to work, capping a drive with a short scoring run from junior Lance Jay.

The Titans would be able to score on a drive that started after a kickoff landed midfield.

With the win the Woodchucks are the no.2-seed in Region 4, and have a first round bye in the playoffs. The Woodchucks were on the road Friday against the Bearcats, and finish off the region tour on Oct. 6 against the Wildcats in Leeds.

The Titans meanwhile hosted the Wildcats on Friday, and will face the Bearcats on the road on Oct. 6.

- The Cougars defeated the Dunseith Dragons, 52-26, last week despite penalties, troubles holding onto the ball and the weather.

The Cougars racked up 42 points in the first half, however the Dragons outscored them 26-10 in the second.

The Cougars faced the Thompson Tommies on Friday. Originally the Cougars were supposed to face the Drake-Anamoose Raiders, however the latter forfeited due to shortage of players. On Oct. 6 the Cougars host former Class A 11-man-turned-9-man Larimore-Emerado in Rolla.

The Dragons were on the road last night, taking on North Border-Wahalla; and they are slated to face the Raiders on Oct. 6.

- In a showdown of cats, the Bearcats defeated the Wildcats, 38-16.
